Internet Safety TipsFive Tips for Staying Safe OnlineYou log into your online email account, and organise the day’s work into neat folders. Some of these emails contain client information, others have personal data. You surf to another site, and do a quirky personality test that requires your personal email address. It’s the end of the month, so you log into your bank account and pay the bills. A book that you’ve had your eye on is on sale online so you pay with your credit card and request it to be delivered to your home address.In the space of about an hour you have given up your name, address, date of birth, bank account details, and credit card numbers to the pervasive genius of the World Wide Web. How secure is all the information you’ve just sent out online and how can you make sure it’s safe?
Check that sites are secure.Look out for websites that have the golden lock icon, displayed either next to the URL at the top of the browser, or at the bottom of the screen. Websites that start with “https://” instead of “http://” are encrypted websites and therefore secure. Encrypted websites mean that the information you send over the internet is garbled and therefore not as easily accessible to cyber crooks.Be careful with personal informationTreat your personal information like the virtual keys to your identity. A thief who has your full name, address and date of birth could open a credit card account in your name, destroying your credit history in the process. Do not post your full name, mother’s maiden name, birth date or personal address on public spaces like forums, chat rooms or networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.Never respond to emails that require you to reply with personal information, and don’t log into online accounts from links sent to you in emails. Many emails that purport to be from your bank or your credit card company are often just phishing scams out to obtain your information.Choose a good passwordIt is surprisingly easy to hack into an online account. Most people have one password that they use for all their accounts. A strong password that is difficult to guess at is a good step to preventing online fraud. Choose a memorable one that contains both numbers and letters. An example of a good password for a foosball fan would be “foo5ball” which is alphanumerical and is easy to remember.Update your anti-virus softwareViruses mutate at an alarmingly fast rate online. Ensure that your anti-virus software is updated and that a virus scan is performed every month or two as part of your computer maintenance procedures. An out-of-date anti-virus program is useless against invasive virtual viruses.Enable your firewallThe firewall is your first line of defence against any unwanted intrusions. It protects your computer and network against unauthorised access from bots and viruses on the internet. Windows XP computers have a firewall built in to the system and many anti-virus programs will have a firewall bundled with them.
