Adobe Photoshop Elements Program Errors

Common Adobe Photoshop Elements Errors

Adobe Photoshop Elements is a slimmed down version of the more expensive, professional Adobe Photoshop program. It is designed to provide intermediate-to-advanced users with a powerful photo editing tool. This program requires quite a chunk of your system’s resources and Photoshop Elements program errors are not uncommon. Among the more common program errors you may encounter are:

  • Illegal operation errors
  • Bluescreen errors
  • Unexpected restarts
  • Frozen cursor errors
  • Frozen screen errors
  • General protection fault errors
  • Invalid page fault errors

Troubleshooting Adobe Photoshop Elements Errors

First, make sure that your computer can handle running this resource intensive program. The minimum system requirements for Photoshop Elements are:

  • Intel Celeron / Intel Pentium 4 / Compatible 1.3GHz or faster processor
  • Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or SP3 / Windows Vista (2GHz or faster processor with 1GB RAM)
  • At least 1.5 GB of free hard disk space
  • 16-bit color video card and color monitor
  • Monitor resolution: 1,024 x 768 at 96 dpi or less
  • Microsoft DirectX 9 (or above) compatible display driver

Once you’re confident that your computer can handle Photoshop Elements, evaluate the circumstances surrounding the program error. System freezes, bluescreen errors, out of memory messages, illegal operations, and other general crashes are often related to a lack of resources. Even if your computer meets the basic requirements, if you have other demanding programs running simultaneously, the load may be too much for Photoshop Elements to handle. Plus, if you’re working with a large file, you may be overwhelming your system.

If the errors seem to occur under specific circumstances, such as when trying to print or when using a specific tool, then the program error may be the result of a conflict with other programs, the operating system, or hardware.

Solving Photoshop Program Errors

If Photoshop Elements did not install properly, it’s possible that your antivirus program or a device interfered with its installation. If your program errors are due to an installation issue, copy the Photoshop Elements folder from the CD to your Windows Desktop  and launch the setup.exe file directly from the desktop rather than from the CD.

It’s always smart to start by updating your Adobe software as well as your operating system. This is because it’s not unusual for manufacturers to discover bugs within their software and then issue a fix via an update. Start by updating Windows and follow up by updating Adobe Photoshop elements. If you notice a problem when using a device such as your mouse or printer, update the device drivers for the hardware as well. For frozen displays, your video card or display drivers may need to be updated as well.

Because Photoshop Elements is a resource-hungry application, close all other applications before starting Photoshop Elements including programs that are running in your System Tray’s notification area. Right-click each icon in the notification area and exit each program. If you shut down your computer security program, make sure to stay offline and re-enable it before going back online.

If performance remains an issue and you are running Windows Vista, disable the Aero interface (Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Customize Color > Classic Appearance Properties > Color Schemes). Though pretty, Windows Aero gobbles up a huge amount of resources. You may be able to recover enough memory to solve your Photoshop program errors.

Freeing up resources and updating your operating system, Adobe software, and device drivers can solve a great number of common Adobe Photoshop Elements program errors.
