QuickTime for Windows Program Errors

Common Apple QuickTime Program Errors

Apple QuickTime is a popular media player. Like any program, it is not immune from running into the occasional program error. Common program errors include compatibility issues, freezes, interference with Internet Explorer, and illegal operations.

QuickTime Program Error Fix

If your installation of Apple QuickTime is generating program errors, one of the first fixes is to update QuickTime. For example, when Internet Explorer stopped supporting Netscape-like plug-ins with Internet Explorer 5 and above, QuickTime program errors would interfere with Internet Explorer and force it to close. A newer version of QuickTime was compatible with the newer versions of Internet Explorer, so by updating to the newer version, the problem was then solved. While this is an older issue that has since been solved, it illustrates how updates easily solve known issues. As a first step when dealing with QuickTime program errors, update both QuickTime as well as your Web browser.

Update Windows

QuickTime requires Windows XP and Windows Vista with the most current Service Pack applied. If you have not applied the most current Service Pack, do so now by going to Control Panel > Windows Update and updating your system to the latest Service Pack. If you have the most current Service Pack, check for updates and install those that apply to your system. Microsoft often discovers bugs and incompatibility issues with third party software and hardware and then fixes those problems in the form of updates. By applying the updates, you are ensuring that your computer is patched with the latest program error fixes that have been discovered and repaired so far.

Check QuickTime Compatibility Mode

Check to make sure that QuickTime is in an appropriate compatibility mode if you are receiving a “QuickTime failed to initialize error.” This error occurs when the compatibility mode has been set for an incompatible version of Windows.  Go to C:\Program Files\QuickTime, right-click the QuickTime application icon and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and clear any checkboxes that may be selected. Click Apply and close the dialog box.

Running QuickTime in Safe Mode

If you have installed the standalone version of QuickTime and the player is generating program errors, try loading it while in Safe Mode. This is a good step in determining if a device driver is potentially interfering with QuickTime. Safe Mode loads only the bare basics of your operating system. If the program works well in Safe Mode, that indicates that another program or device could be interfering with its operation.

QuickTime Conflicts

It’s not unusual for QuickTime to experience errors due to conflicts with devices and other installed software. Conflicts with sound cards, video cards, and DirectX are common. Check with the manufacturer of your sound and video cards to see if a more current device driver has been issued. If so, download and apply the updates.

Likewise, check to see what version of DirectX is installed (if at all) on your computer. Do this by going to Start > Run and typing in: dxdiag. This will generate a report detailing the current version of DirectX your computer is running. If you are using QuickTime 7 and want to view standard or high definition videos, you will need a video card compatible with DirectX 9 or above; otherwise, you will encounter QuickTime program errors when trying to view the videos.

Updating your operating system, Web browser, device drivers, software, QuickTime, and DirectX are all good steps that can fix many QuickTime program errors.
