Upcoming Features of Microsoft’s Windows 7 Operating System

October 22, 2009 is the official release date for the new Windows 7 operating system. Several leaked images and videos are circulating the Internet, but users will soon be able to experience the benefits of a prettier Windows operating system. For people planning to upgrade, here are several highlights that the new platform brings.

Jump Lists

Jumps lists are included in Windows 7 software to give you the ease of finding frequently accessed files. Jump lists are used to replace the concept of shortcut icons. Instead of clicking a shortcut to access your favorite image, file, music file, or web page, jump lists show you the common files that are used from the task bar.

Improved Taskbar

For people who like to have multiple windows open in the taskbar, Windows 7 gives users greater manipulation of icons and programs. One of the nicest features in Windows 7 is the ability to move icons around the taskbar. It gives you better capabilities of arranging priority programs. Windows 7 also allows you to hover over the applications running in the taskbar and receive a quick thumbnail view of the program’s image.

Homeshare Networking

Windows 7 introduces a new concept of sharing files, printers, and network resources. As long as two computers are running Windows 7, add any type of file to the Homeshare directory, and they are automatically shared with other computers on the network. Security is still a resource given to owners of files, so permissions are available to limit the use of files on your computer.

Touch Screen Enhancements

Microsoft is pushing the touch screen monitors. Windows 7 is optimized for touch screen use. Of course, this requires the extra cost of a monitor with that kind of technology, so users may not be ready for this type of enhancement. This enhancement is probably more useful for businesses and call centers.

If you’re ready for a new operating system, Windows 7 is a lot of enhancements for a decent price. The home edition has an upgrade price of $49.99, which is much better than Microsoft’s previous version offers. You may want to avoid the lines in the stores on October 22, but upgrading won’t disappoint you.
