How to Fix Word Program Errors
Word Program Errors
Microsoft Word has encountered an error and needs to close. These are ten words that can cause a great deal of grief to anyone who has encountered them. If you are faced with Word program errors, take a deep breath. While annoying and mysterious, many Word program fixes are available. In fact, Word comes with a built-in repair tool for this very purpose. The tool is slightly different depending on which version of Word you are using.
Fixing Word Program Errors in Word 2003 and Below
In Word 2003 and below, the program error repair tool is called “Detect and Repair.” This tool is accessible from within Word itself as well as via the Microsoft Office setup utility. If you are able to open Word, go ahead and do so. Once loaded, click on Tools > Detect and Repair. You will be prompted to have your installation disc handy. Detect and Repair scans your installation of Word in search of damaged or missing program files. If program files are damaged or missing, then program errors are inevitable. By replacing these files with clean copies from the installation disc, your Word program errors will be fixed! If prompted, insert the disc and let Word fix your program for you.
Download this free scanner to find problems with Programs, Windows, Software and your Hard drive:
If Word is damaged to the point where you cannot launch it, you can either access Detect and Repair through another Office program such as Excel or use the Add and Remove Programs icon to repair Word. To use Add and Remove Programs, go to the Control Panel and click on Add and Remove Programs. Find Microsoft Office in the list and click on the Change or Repair option (the wording may vary depending on your version of Word). This will open the setup utility where you can then repair the program by clicking Repair Office.
Fixing Word Program Errors in Word 2007
The process for repairing Word program errors in Word 2007 is different. As you likely know, Word 2007 represented a major overhaul of Office’s word processing program. There is no Help menu item, nor is there a Detect and Repair option. However, there is the handy Office button and the Microsoft Office Diagnostics tool. Like Detect and Repair, this tool can be run from within Word or through external means.
If Word opens, click on the Office button and click on Word Options. Click the Resources link followed by clicking on the “run Microsoft Office Diagnostics’” Diagnose button. This tool connects to Microsoft’s servers so you may not need your original installation discs to access fresh copies of damaged files.
If Word does not open because of its program errors, fix Word externally by launching another Office program and accessing the Microsoft Office Diagnostics tool through it. Alternately, you can launch the diagnostics tool directly. To do this, click on Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Diagnostics. Follow the prompts to fix Word program errors.
