How to Optimize Internet Security

Optimizing Internet Security for File Sharing

Internet security is a big concern for everyone, and rightly so. But what if you must share files with someone? How do you keep your computer safe?

File sharing can be useful, easy, and efficient

Internet users can easily exchange files from their own computers through simple "Peer to Peer" applications. These applications, however, open your computer to malicious codes that come from virus-infected computers. File sharing technology has no anti-virus protection. This means that you have no defenses against viruses from shared files. In addition, Peer to Peer technology prevents you from knowing whether you are sharing with a trustworthy source unlike with mail where the identity of the sender is automatically determined.

Hackers prey on those who share files

Because of all this, hackers can easily share files infected with viruses, spyware, worms, Trojan horses, and the like. It's also close to impossible for a regular internet user to track the hacker down. All this adds up to a disaster waiting to happen. This is especially true because of the ease by which your personal information can be accessed.

Disabling a firewall is a pain in the ...

As if those weren't enough, some transmissions require you disable firewalls in order to receive the incoming file. This leaves your computer even more open to a hacker attack. Also, a person may send pirated material. If you download it, you may be faced with a fine or a few legal actions. This is true whether or not you knew the material was illegal.

Thinking twice

All these drawbacks of file sharing should, at the very least, make you think twice before you open your computer up to hackers. They should also make you interested in any handy systems that can lower the risk of hackers. And although they never fully remove the many risks in file sharing, there are several utilities you can apply to maximize internet security and minimize risks. The most common of these internet security utilities are described below.

Anti-virus software is a good, basic, hacker-preventing tool to install

They run inside your computer where they detect viruses. If one is found, the utility cleans or eliminates the infected file. Not all viruses can be avoided simply by mistrusting unknown sources and unreliable websites so anti-virus software is essential.

As technology improves, so do the viruses and the hackers' techniques

This presents continuous development of new threats. Fortunately, new ways to counteract them are also continuously being developed. Anti-virus software is thus crucial to your computer's security and it is important to keep them updated at all times. Anti-virus software can either be free or paid and each addresses different levels of internet security needs. Be sure to choose one that is compatible with your internet usage.

Firewalls are essential for deterring hackers

With even the bare minimum of defense, a hacker will have a significantly harder time accessing your system and gathering personal information. At least one personal firewall is recommended for an individual computer. If your computer is running on an internal network, you should enable a network firewall. Network firewalls are in both hardware and software formats-the former usually in most routers, the latter both freely distributed and purchasable. The more firewalls you install, the less chance a hacker has of accessing your system, although the threat is never fully eliminated.
